a home for art
Dear Friend,
The Boston Globe recently named BPT’s production of Jay Eddy’s Driving in Circles as one of the top ten theatre experiences of 2024, calling the show “nothing short of riveting” and concluding “whether a single performer is onstage or a dozen are, what matters is the power of the voice and the story that voice is telling.”
We couldn’t agree more.
At Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, we pride ourselves on being a home for playwrights and a welcoming oasis for all artists. In 2024, we’ve found many new and exciting ways to demonstrate our commitment to new art and new partnerships. As 2024 closes, can we count on you to affirm your commitment to this vital work with a donation of any size?
We hope you’ve seen—either in person or in photo form—the stunning new mural in our entryway by local artists Silvia Lopez Chavez and Mario Ramirez. This bright and festive new work livens up the path to our front doors and proudly proclaims that this is a home for art.
While our commitment to artists will always be locally-centered (it’s in our name, after all), we’ve also been looking for ways to find homes for our artists elsewhere. Last fall, our production of Mr. Parent traveled to Geva Theatre in Rochester, NY, where Maurice Parent was able to perform for hundreds of new friends (in a Rochester-specific version of the script!). This fall, we facilitated another production at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park.
This Summer we partnered with Company One to develop and produce Eliana Pipes’ Hoops at the historic Strand Theatre in Dorchester, where audience members said “This is what it looks like when we’re producing things about us, for us.”
This Fall we launched our first ever “rep festival,” producing two new plays simultaneously in the same space, creating an explosion of new work on the intimate Snodgrass Stage. And we’ll be doing it again with two more plays in the Spring!
But we’re not done yet: for the first time ever, in 2025 we are hosting a showcase in NYC for our graduating playwrights to present their work to the NY theatre community, inviting producers, agents, performers, and theatre artists of all stripes to meet our incredible graduating class.
As 2024 draws to a close, I’ve often walked into the theater with a song on repeat in my brain; a song my mother used to sing to me as a child, and which I now sing to my daughter:
“Through all kinds of weather
What if the sky should fall
Just as long as we're together
It doesn't matter at all.”
You’ve supported us in the past, with a donation and/or attending our productions, and now we are asking you to donate again before year’s end to help BPT deepen our mission to support the voice and vision of playwrights, and continue to be a welcoming home to artists, a place where we are together in all kinds of weather, even when it feels like the sky is falling.
With all my gratitude,
Megan Sandberg-Zakian
